[Post #1] Found a Great New Way to Study, But Something Was Missing: Why I Built "Simple Side Note"

Lately, I have discovered an incredible way to level up my English skills: using Google Search’s AI Mode. It is like having a private tutor who provides perfect definitions, context-aware synonyms, and natural example sentences instantly
.

However, as I dove deeper into this new study method, I realized there was a frustrating gap. Every time the AI provided a brilliant expression I wanted to keep, I had to switch windows or tabs to my notepad. This constant "tab-switching" was more than just a minor inconvenience—it was a total flow-breaker that made recording my progress feel like a chore.
I thought to myself, "Why can't my notepad just live right next to my search results?"
Since I couldn't find the perfect tool for this, I decided to build it myself. Introducing Simple Side Note, a Chrome extension designed to be the missing piece of your AI-powered learning journey.
🚀 Turning "Disappointment" into "Productivity"
The core goal of Simple Side Note is to keep you in the "flow state." I wanted a tool that would allow me to capture knowledge without ever leaving the page I was on.
Here is how it solves the problems I faced:
  • Always by Your Side: By utilizing the Chrome Side Panel API, the notepad stays fixed on the side of your browser. Even if you switch tabs or scroll through long AI responses, your notes are always visible.

  • The "Add to Memo" Magic: I found that typing out long example sentences from the AI was a waste of time. Now, I can just select the text, right-click, and choose "Add to Memo." It instantly snaps into my notepad with a timestamp, so I know exactly when I learned it.
  • Zero-Friction Saving: When you are in the zone, the last thing you want to worry about is hitting a 'Save' button. My app features Auto-Save, ensuring every thought is captured the moment you type it.

  • A Workspace That Feels Right: Studying for hours can be hard on the eyes. To make the experience more comfortable, I included three UI themes: Light, Dark, and a paper-like Warm tone.
💻 Built for Learners, Open for Everyone
I built this using the latest Manifest V3 standards to ensure it is fast, lightweight, and secure. It is currently pending review in the Chrome Web Store, but I have already made the entire project open-source on GitHub for anyone who wants to see how it works or contribute to its development.
Creating this tool turned my "frustrating" study sessions into a seamless, productive experience. I hope that by sharing Simple Side Note, I can help other language learners focus on what actually matters: learning, not tab-switching.
